Why Travelling with Strangers can be a Unique Experience!

W

The concept of the other, or a stranger, are merely human constraints and constructs, that have been created and passed on from generations to ward off threatening situations. While it may have its downside, the upside is that you have a lot to gain by making friends with strangers.

Meeting people from a diverse background

There is never a dull day when meeting strangers. Knowing that you’re all in this together, it forces you to speak to people you might not have ever met otherwise. It is a great way to make new friends. Especially when you’re travelling. I’ve met some incredible people (from adventurous cyclists in their 60s to hikers hiking to the K2 base camp) that have left the comfort of their homes to go on adventures to unfamiliar places, only to receive love and kindness from strangers. Once you get over the fear of being judged or rejected, there are endless opportunities.

Learning to be humble and appreciative of the needs of others

Being in the surrounding of people that have differing views about religion, culture, and society can have a profound impact upon your personality. Having the ability to understand another’s perspective can teach empathy and be a positive learning experience. Respecting others and their opinions is certainly the way to make friends.

Learning to trust

There is something special about gaining the trust of strangers and learning to trust them back. It can get you out of sticky situations in times of need. Being open about your personality, your strengths and your weaknesses, whiles showing compassion and understanding can lead to trust developing in others.

An awesome way to make new friends

There is no better way to get to know people than on an exciting adventure. If you find yourself in the midst of a group of strangers and going through the same experience.  Perhaps by accident, coincidence or a fortunate connection, those serendipitous moments can lead to lasting relationships.

In the end everything is about how one perceives the world and how we see others. A social construct is just a limitation that can be overcome and lead to some amazing adventures.
